Have you been hearing a lot about PPE lately, but don’t know much about it? Read on to gain knowledge and play your part in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
Whenever we talk about the novel coronavirus, i.e., COVID-19 and protective measures for reducing its spread, one of the words that we most often come across is PPE. While everyone has heard about it, some people may not have much information about why PPE is important, who needs it, and how does it work against COVID-19.

This article aims to answer all your questions regarding PPE.
What Is PPE?

PPE is an acronym for Personal Protective Equipment. While the term has now largely become associated with COVID-19, it essentially refers to the protective gear used to reduce exposure to hazardous elements. Different types of PPEs are used in various professions, such as lab research and construction.
With regards to COVID-19, the term refers to the protective gear used to keep yourself safe from the novel coronavirus. It includes a face mask, goggles, face shields, gloves, rubber boots or shoe covers, and respirators.

Who Needs PPE?

In the current scenario, almost everyone needs to wear some form of protective gear, when going outside, to protect themselves as well as others. However, some people need it more than others. Also, not everyone needs all the safety equipment mentioned above. The amount and type of PPE one needs depend on the level of risk they have.
Since healthcare workers are fighting against the pandemic on frontlines and the nature of their work doesn’t allow them to maintain social distance either, they have the greatest risk of getting infected. Hence, they need maximum protection.
Apart from healthcare staff, people who have tested positive for COIVD-19 should also wear a face mask (along with following all hygiene practices) to prevent the spread of the virus. Similarly, those living with or taking care of coronavirus patients should also wear protective gear to avoid catching the disease. According to the latest guidelines, anyone working close (within 2 meters) to coronavirus patients (confirmed or suspected) should wear eye protection, surgical face mask, gloves, and a full-body apron or gown.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone should wear a face mask when going out in public.

Why is PPE Important?

COVID-19 is the new strain of coronavirus, which is why our information regarding the virus and its spread is limited. Also, we still do not have any vaccine or cure available for the disease. In such a scenario, the only thing we can do to remain safe from the novel virus is to protect ourselves. And PPE helps us do just that!
The use of the right PPE type in the right manner can help reduce (if not stop) the spread of COVID-19.
The Final Word
In view of the rapid spread of COVID-19, it can be said that the use of personal protective equipment is essential to keep yourself and others safe. However, as the World Health Organization suggests, the right type of PPE varies from person to person, depending on the type of activities they are engaged in and the kind of setting they work in. In other words, the higher the risk of exposure for a person, the more protection they will need.
